Classical design and advisory services undertaken over the last 65 years have positioned Dorsch Gruppe as a successful independent global player amongst consulting engineers. Whilst retaining those services we have continued to develop our experience in the water and environmental sectors by including integrated management and project life-cycle consulting. These advisory services are rendered with a view to sustained value creation for the benefit of our clients, whether national or international. Furthermore we are committed to increasing our activity in advisory services for Project Structure Plan- (PSP) and Public Private Partnership- (PPP) projects, which we see as providing growth opportunities for public and private sector partners alike. The division Water & Environment contributes directly to the entire service spectrum: from sustainable water resource protection and development, through to the treatment, storage, supply and distribution of potable and industrial water. Our portfolio extends to stormwater and wastewater drainage and wastewater treatment. We offer consulting in supply and waste disposal system design, airport drainage, the treatment of industrial wastewater, and of concrete and sewer rehabilitation. We manage complex projects requiring the expertise of the most diverse specialists, involving system survey and pipe network documentation, network analyses and simulation studies, all in conjunction with our hydroinformatics department.

Leak test and sanitation of property drainage systems

Investigations have revealed, that about 90% of the property drainage systems showed damages.  Due to leaking sewers, wastewater can sink into the underground and contaminate the soil and groundwater. Because of that all inacessible or any underground sewers containing industrial waste water, have to immediately go through a leak test. Household sewers have to be tested on leaks till 2015. Since 2001, the company branch „Water and Enviroment“ provide their customers engineering services through certified channel sanitation advisers. Hydraulics concerns the taming of water torrents to protect man and property, and its use for mankind in infrastructure. This includes the improvement and construction of navigation canals – together with the appurtenant structures such as locks, impounding structures, weirs, ship-lifting devices, fluvial and maritime harbours, quay walls, ferry jetties and flood alleviation works. Design tasks in hydraulics are also solved holistically, so that we are confronted with all facets of the subject. Our interdisciplinary project teams led by hydraulic engineers work their way through to the optimal, sustainable solution. Our list of duties covers all activities such as dam construction, canal invert and side slope stabilisation, the design and specification of reinforced concrete and structural steel components, pumping stations and the related equipment. In addition we carry out settlement and deformation computations, structural analyses, hydrological studies and the complete service palette for the electromechanical installations. This applies not only to new capital investments, but also to rehabilitation works. Our wide variety of activities for clients in the public sector, such as the German navigation and water authorities, has equipped us with a good insight into the procedures and organisational systems of government departments. Monolithic construction methods and complex analyses, such as three-dimensional settlement computations using finite elements provide evidence of our systematic approach and our capacity for innovation.

Numeric simulation methods play an important role in many technical domains of the water sector. Using measured data they predict of natural and man-made flow processes and are thus essential for system designs. Our service spectrum covers both the application of existing hydraulics and hydrology models, and custom-made developments for individual solutions. We have also carried out our own extensive in-house software development, such as the hydrodynamic sewerage model BaSYS-HydroCAD, the long-term flow series simulation with computation of pollution flux, and the statistical evaluation of precipitation data. These programs are also integrated as modules into the GIS system BaSYS L.E.O. by Barthauer Software GmbH, which is responsible for the marketing of our own in-house software.

Our interdisciplinary teams of engineers, geologists, geo-ecologists and biologists provide a comprehensive service from concept initiation to design of the rehabilitation works of disposal sites and abandoned tips. In addition, we evaluate environmental risks in the context of environmental due diligence checks and compile an overview of the necessary remedial measures and associated costs. As a certified investigator pursuant to § 18 of the German federal soil protection law we can assure competent technical investigations of refuse dumps, including an impact assessment in accordance with the German directive BBodSchV. For these landfill projects we can provide the entire scope of services from site identification and evaluation to a comprehensive design and the subsequent holistically oriented aftercare programme.

This subject is devoted to the transmission of forces from buildings to the subsoil, including the equilibrium of forces between buildings embedded in the soil and their environment; it also deals specifically with the characteristics of soil as a construction material. Our geotechnical department has substantial experience in managing complex projects both in Germany and abroad. The range of our projects spans individual dwellings, tunnels, dams and embankments, roads and railways, bridges and retaining walls, channels, pipelines and airports. Our specialist geotechnical department emerged from the previous "Institute for soil and foundation engineering" created in 1968.

We pursue a holistic and future-oriented approach for the protection, care, development and – where necessary - remediation of the environment, with particular reference to ecology and landscape.  During all planning phases we assist and support through all the instances of planning permission. We provide a broad spectrum of design and analysis services in connection with the building of cities, roads, airports, pipelines and diverse plants, in the mining industry and in water and waste management.  The objective treatment of the often complex challenges implies the systematic use of modern information systems, in particular GIS and CAD technologies.

Water losses result mainly from leaky fittings, from burst pipes and unlicensed withdrawals, but may also be apparent as a result of faulty measurements.These losses, in combination with limited water resources and its excessive use can lead to water shortages or unnecessary depletion of groundwater reserves. In order to be able to assure financially viable and sustainable operation of the networks, such water losses must be reduced to a minimum. Integrated GIS-assisted management systems enable us to identify defective components in the network, which can then be addressed using web-based data entry software regardless of the institutions and platforms concerned. Technical analyses by our specialists determine the specific action required and provide strategies extending from the immediate repair required to beyond. Thus all necessary maintenance measures can be identified in real-time and can be coordinated objectively between the different agencies involved. The objective here is the creation of efficient systems and the simultaneous reduction of water losses, so as to improve unsatisfactory conditions in the supply and sewerage networks.

The arid nature of the area and the superimposed problems, caused by the increased water demands of a growing population, has turned water management into an increasing challenge. Therefore in order to better deal with this complex problem, a series of steps will also be observed in addition to the known irrigation techniques. The irrigation technique used will be the most appropriate for the area in question. Drip irrigation will be prioritized however while taking advantage of the different emitter and mini/micro sprinklers classifications. 

In addition to the irrigation techniques there are other steps, which can be implemented in order to safeguard the water resources.
