Description

The study is a component of the feasibility study on "Coal phase-out and sustainable district heating supply Berlin 2030". It examines how the coal phase-out can be achieved by 2030 at the latest and how a CO2-free district heating supply can be achieved. Part of this analysis is the examination of the construction of a large-scale heat pump plant with river water at the Reuter/ Reuter West site. This includes the elaboration of the technical feasibility and regulatory framework of a heat pump plant of up to 90 MW useful thermal capacity.

Outcome:

  • The use of river water heat from March to November possible (about 230 days a year).
  • The days of the cold season are especially critical here.
  • Technical operating limits are tightened by regulatory requirements. Direct use of the water is preferable to indirect use despite regulatory higher requirements.
  • Heat exchangers in the water are not economically viable because the flow velocity is too low.
