Description
In phase I of this project from 1986 to 1987 a German-Egyptian engineering consortium (including Dorsch) prepared a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of the 225 km long Damietta Branch.
In phase II in 1990 the consortium was entrusted with the selection of a new weir location upstream of El Mansoura, the supervision of survey and subsoil investigation works and the preparation of a revised economic project evaluation.
In phase III the engineering consortium was retained for the design and tender phase.
The scope of work for this phase comprised:
- Design of construction measures, equipment and facilities required to provide year-round navigation on the Damietta Branch including river regulation works, aids to navigation (mainly steel buoys and concrete anchor blocks), new navigation locks at Delta Bar-rage and Zifta, plus optional new submerged weir and navigation lock upstream of El Mansoura
- Development of river port at Athar el Nabi near Cairo
- Dredging study of the river stretch Zifta - El Mansoura (min. channel depth 2.30 m) based on revised discharge conditions
- Environmental impact assessment of entire project
- Feasibility study on improvements of Luxor and Aswan mooring facilities and
- Study on improvements on aids to navigation system on river Nile between Cairo and Aswan.
The project components covered by Dorsch embrace hydraulic-hydrological engineering, river morphology, hydraulic steel structures, electrical engineering, sanitary engineering, soils and foundation engineering, environmental planning, transport economics, quantity surveying and contract engineering.
